An unprecedented pilot project has begun in the Canton of Geneva to combat the Asian hornet (*Vespa velutina*). For the first time in Switzerland, In-Finitude's Pollenn® geomatics platform coordinates real-time control efforts against this invasive species threatening bees and biodiversity.

An innovative partnership

This annual project brings together four key stakeholders:

  • The PIBG association ensures project coordination and management.
  • The Canton of Geneva (OCAN) provides financial support.
  • The Polliena association mobilizes volunteers for nest detection and destruction in the field.
  • In-Finitude provides Pollenn® to centralize observations, map risk zones, and coordinate interventions.

The Asian hornet: a growing threat

Arrived in Switzerland in 2017, the Asian hornet is spreading rapidly. This invasive species:

  • Formidable predator: up to 50 bees captured per day per hornet
  • Threatens biodiversity by attacking wild pollinators
  • Can become dangerous near its nest, especially in autumn

Pollenn®'s role

The platform enables:

  • Geolocated centralization of reports
  • Real-time dynamic mapping
  • Optimal coordination of field teams and control efforts
  • Traceable scientific data collection
  • Facilitated citizen engagement

Report your observations!

Have you seen an Asian hornet or nest? Report it immediately on www.frelonasiatique.ch.

Recognizing the Asian hornet:

  • Black body with orange band on abdomen
  • Yellow legs at extremities
  • Size: 3 to 3.5 cm
  • Hovering flight in front of hives or flowers
  • ⚠️ Never attempt to destroy a nest yourself!

Expected results

Results from this pilot project will be published at the end of 2025 and will evaluate the system's effectiveness for potential deployment in other cantons and countries.
